Can You Swim in Sequin Swimwear?
It is the single most common question we get. Can you actually swim in a sequin bikini, or is it just for photos?
The short answer: yes, absolutely. But only if it is made properly.
The longer answer is worth reading, because the difference between a sequin bikini that falls apart in the pool and one that lasts for years comes down to three things: materials, construction, and how the sequins are attached.
The Problem With Most Sequin Swimwear
Most sequin bikinis on the market are not really swimwear. They are costume pieces with a swimwear label. The sequins are either glued onto the fabric or attached with a single thread that unravels the moment it hits chlorine or salt water.
You have probably seen it happen. You buy a sparkly bikini for a holiday, wear it once in the sea, and half the sequins are floating away by the time you get out. The glue dissolves. The thread snaps. What looked incredible on Instagram looks like a craft project gone wrong after one swim.
This is not a flaw with sequin swimwear as a concept. It is a flaw with how most brands make it.
What Makes Sequin Swimwear Actually Swimwear
There are three things that separate real sequin swimwear from the costume stuff:
1. The Sequin Material
Standard craft sequins are made from PVC or cheap plastic. They crack, fade, and degrade in chlorine and UV light. Swimwear-grade sequins (or in our case, real shell sequins) are designed to withstand salt water, pool chemicals, and sun exposure without losing their finish.
The Concha Shell Bikini uses individually cut shell sequins. Real shell does not crack or fade the way plastic does. It actually looks better wet.
2. How They Are Attached
This is where most brands cut corners. Gluing sequins onto fabric is fast and cheap. It also means one swim and they start peeling off.
Hand-stitching is the only method that holds up to real wear. Every single shell on a Concha Shell Bikini is individually hand-stitched onto the fabric. That is 147 shells per piece, each one secured by hand. It takes hours, but it means those shells are not going anywhere.
3. The Base Fabric
If the fabric underneath is not proper swimwear fabric, it does not matter how well the sequins are attached. The base needs to be chlorine-resistant, quick-drying, and UV-stable. Cheap sequin bikinis often use fashion fabric that stretches out, goes see-through when wet, or pills after one wear.
So Can You Swim in a Sequin Bikini?
If it is made with swimwear-grade materials, hand-stitched construction, and proper fabric, yes. You can swim in the ocean. You can swim in a pool. You can wear it all day in the sun.
If it is a glued-on costume piece from a fast fashion site, treat it like a photo prop and nothing more.
How to Care for Your Sequin Swimwear
Even well-made sequin swimwear lasts longer when you treat it right. Here is what we recommend:
After Every Wear
- Rinse immediately in cool fresh water. Salt and chlorine are fine in small doses, but do not let them sit on the fabric for hours.
- Gently squeeze out water. Never wring or twist. The shells can handle a lot, but wringing puts unnecessary stress on the stitching.
- Lay flat to dry in the shade. Direct sun is fine when you are wearing it, but prolonged UV exposure on damp fabric can weaken elasticity over time.
Washing
- Hand wash only. A gentle detergent in cool water. Swish it around for a minute, then rinse thoroughly.
- Never machine wash. The tumbling action can loosen even hand-stitched embellishments over time.
- Never use bleach or fabric softener. Both break down swimwear fabric and can dull the finish on shell sequins.
Storage
- Store flat or folded gently. Do not crumple sequin swimwear into a ball at the bottom of your beach bag. The shells will not break, but the fabric around them can crease permanently.
- Keep away from rough surfaces. Store separately from items with zips, hooks, or velcro that can snag.
How Long Does Sequin Swimwear Last?
A glued sequin bikini? Maybe one or two wears before it starts shedding.
A hand-stitched piece like the Concha Shell? With proper care, years. The shell sequins do not degrade, and the hand-stitching holds through repeated wear and washing.
We have customers who have worn theirs across multiple seasons and multiple countries without losing a single shell.
The Bottom Line
Can you swim in a sequin bikini? Yes. But do your homework before you buy one.
Check how the sequins are attached. Ask what they are made from. Look at the base fabric. If the brand cannot tell you these things, that tells you everything.
If you want a sequin bikini that is built to actually swim in, take a look at the Concha Shell collection. Seven colours (Cream, Blue, Chocolate, Green, Orange, Yellow, and Pink), 147 hand-stitched shells per piece, and made for the water.
